Semaglutide
Semaglutide is a potent, once-weekly glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) widely used to manage type 2 diabetes and support weight loss. It has been shown to significantly reduce HbA1c levels, body weight, and systolic blood pressure. Like other drugs in the GLP-1 RA class, semaglutide mimics the action of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone released from the gut after meals, which stimulates insulin secretion and helps lower blood glucose levels. GLP-1–based therapies have been used clinically for more than fifteen years.
Beyond glucose control, increased GLP-1 activity affects areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation and satiety, leading to reduced caloric intake. When combined with a healthy diet and regular physical activity, semaglutide can support substantial and sustained weight loss, which may lower the risk of obesity-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. While highly effective, semaglutide is associated with a higher rate of gastrointestinal side effects, and ongoing post-approval safety monitoring continues to assess potential links to conditions such as pancreatitis and diabetic retinopathy.
