Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is a medication that works by targeting two key hormone receptors involved in blood sugar regulation: glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It has FDA approval for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not indicated for type 1 diabetes and has not been studied in individuals with a prior history of pancreatitis.

By stimulating both GIP and GLP-1 pathways, tirzepatide helps lower blood glucose levels while also supporting significant weight reduction in people with type 2 diabetes. Beyond its approved indication, some clinicians may prescribe tirzepatide off-label to assist with weight management. In diabetes care, it is generally considered a second-line option, similar in use to other GLP-1–based therapies such as semaglutide.
